[Food] Book, presents a dish in the book form. An initiative that confronts on a very elementary level, the food that we are constantly surrounded by and the ingredients that are used to make them. Each ingredient is represented by a bespoke paper that’s handmade in its likeness, revealing the qualities & exact quantities of ingredients used to make the dish.
[Popiah] Book was commissioned to be part of ‘Future of Craft: Food’ exhibition and was featured in Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 in 2019.
Opening the book is like dissecting the dish. Showing the simplicity and honesty of the ingredients that go into one dish, in this case, the selected dish — [Popiah] as seen in the image above.
The aim is to give a greater understanding of the dish in which we eat, not to editorialise or enhance or change it. Just showing what is there. A raw directness, which calls for reflection on how we see the ingredients that make up a dish. Edifying the parallels of craftsmanship seen in the act of cooking – [Popiah] and the act of making – Book.
