The Elephant’s Secret Kitchen is a collaborative vegetarian cookbook project between students and technicians from London College of Communication and the Cafe at Jamyang hidden away in Elephant and Castle. As part of its concept and community initiative, the entire cookbook was organically printed in-house on the university Heidelberg lithography press with an eco-friendly and sustainable design approach.
ISBN: 978–1–9996463–0–1
With an ethos for eco-friendly and sustainable design, the materials used to make the cookbook comes from recycled paper made from food waste and the bookmarks were colored using natural dyes from vegetables.
Published by AndCastle Press (LCC BookArts workshop’s in-house independent press), this publication was made with paper from Favini (Favini Crush, 120gsm: corn, olive, kiwi and almond) that’s created using the process residues from organic products saved from landfill to replace 15% of virgin tree pulp and with 40% post-consumer waste fibre. The bookmarks within each book were made in a natural dyeing workshop by students, with natural dyes sourced from food wastes in the kitchen.
Bound in Belgium by Brepols bindery.
The Elephant’s Secret Kitchen cookbook was shortlisted for the British Book Design & Production Awards 2019 in the Lifestyle Illustrated category.
